How to Add a Gift Card to Your Amazon Pay Balance (Step by Step)
A claim code is not money until you add it. Here is the exact path on the Amazon app and on the web, what the balance can and cannot be spent on afterwards, and the two mistakes that cause most failures.
A gift card code is a string, not a balance. Until you add it to your account, it does nothing — and it is the step people skip, because the code arriving feels like the end of the process.
It takes about thirty seconds. Do it the moment you have the code, not later, because a code that lives only in a screenshot is a code you will eventually lose.
On the Amazon app (Android or iPhone)
- Open the Amazon app and make sure you are signed in to the account you want the balance in. This matters: balance is tied to an account and cannot be moved between accounts afterwards.
- Tap the menu (☰), then Amazon Pay.
- Tap Add balance / Gift card, then Add gift card.
- Enter the claim code exactly as issued. Paste it rather than typing it — see the mistakes section below.
- Tap Add to your balance. The amount appears in your Amazon Pay balance immediately.
On the web
- Go to amazon.in and sign in.
- Open Accounts & Lists → Gift cards, or go straight to the redeem page at amazon.in/gc/redeem.
- Paste the claim code into the field and choose Apply to your balance.
Both routes end in the same place. There is no difference in what you receive.
Checking that it worked
Open Amazon Pay → Amazon Pay balance. The new amount should be there, and the transaction history should show a gift-card entry with the date. If the balance moved, you are done — the code is now permanently consumed and the string no longer matters.
What Amazon Pay balance can be spent on
Most physical products sold and shipped by Amazon, and most digital purchases. It is applied automatically at checkout before any card is charged.
What it generally cannot do: buy another gift card, be transferred to a bank account, or be sent to another person. Gift card balance in India is not withdrawable cash, and any service offering to convert it into bank money at a discount is buying stolen codes. Do not use them — the transaction is traceable and the loss lands on you.
The two mistakes that cause most failures
Typing the code by hand
Claim codes mix digits and letters in fonts where 0/O and 1/I/l are nearly identical. Copy and paste. If you are reading the code off an image, zoom in rather than guessing — a single wrong character produces "invalid code", which reads as though the card is dead when it is only mistyped.
Being signed in to the wrong account
If you have a personal account and a shared family account, check which one is loaded before you add. Gift card balance cannot be moved between accounts afterwards, and Amazon support will not transfer it. Check first; there is no undo.
If the code is refused
Every refusal has a known cause, and most are fixable. The full list is here, including what "already redeemed" actually means and what to do when the region does not match.
Where the code came from matters
If you earned the card on a rewards platform, add it while you are still in the app that gave it to you — that is the moment you have the code in front of you and the moment you are least likely to lose it. Everything about how those platforms are funded, and how to tell a real one from a front, is in our guide to free Amazon gift cards in India.
